This Autumn we are introducing an upholstery taster, as part of Sustainable September, by getting creative and making your very own sustainable footstool. A great opportunity to learn the basics of upholstery, learn about materials, how to use tools and create your own piece to take home. 

No experience necessary. All tools and materials provided.  Fun, informal and creative. All materials are natural, recyclable and repurposed.

Fabrics are provided from off-cut remnants with Fire Retardant standards. If you wish to bring your own please contact me so I can approve.

You will learn valuable skills, collaborate creatively and have your very own sustainable footstool lovingly made by yourself or as a gift for a loved one.

Workshop Outline

You will use pre-cut materials of FSC wood base, eco-friendly foam padding and select from a range of pre-cut quality repurposed upholstery fabric for the top layer. 

You can choose from either covered buttons design or a plain upper with brass studded edging. 

You will learn how to cover the buttons and get creative (in your choice of off-cut fabric, can be contrast colours, we love a colour contrast here at Upcycled Upholstery!) You will learn how to fix the buttons in place through the fabric using a tufting needle and webbing. 

We encourage use of Colour - it is a powerful medium for self-expression, uplifting mood and playful creative freedom, and there will be a selection of bold, colourful fabrics to choose from. 

You will experiment working with the material, the hand-feel and how to create natural folds for button tufting and how to finish the corners. You will then secure the fabric in place and use brass studs to fix the fabric to the wooden base.  

We will finish by securing the FSC wooden feet into the pre-drilled holes and completing the underneath with a black fire-retardant lining. 

You will leave with your very own personalized sustainable footstool  – made from repurposed fabric and natural materials which can be used time and time again in the comfort of your own home.
